Plasma extenders proof of concept

Yesterday I have been working on the plasma extender concept. Right now I have a proof of concept. It works quite fine for very few lines of code.

The animation of the concept itself is:

I have recorded an animation showing the proof of concept. If you want to try it yourself, you can also download the patch.

Each time I see a blog post about this attention details it makes me smile. It makes so much difference for the end user, and give KDE 4.0 a good first impression.

Interesting to see that this oldest Plasma mockup finally comes to live. I’m really looking forward to see something out of that!

Btw., if you agree I would host your video as a flash file.

  • superstoned

I don’t think it should be here in a proprietary flash format. Let ppl download mplayer, xine or VLC…

“Let ppl download mplayer, xine or VLC?”

Right now I’m on a machine in the computer lab at the university. Not only does it have only an old version of flash, but it definitely does not have any capability of letting me install new codecs, nevermind unixy media players. Meh.

Troy: maybe thats on purpose? maybe you shouldn’t watch movies there? ;) at least its no valid reason to put it up in another format.

There are VLC packages that do not require installation on its web site.

I can’t get your video to play in VLC, Kaffeine, Totem, MPlayer, or Democracy! They all segfault.

  • E

jayKayEss: Try adding -vo x11 to the mplayer command.

I hope this feature is implemented in Plasma as good as it looks. If done right, this is sure to copied by MS and Apple (Apple for sure).
